The CNB issues a new version of the CZK 5,000 banknote
The Czech National Bank is today putting into circulation a new, 2023 version of the CZK 5,000 banknote. The new note will complement the two existing 1999 and 2009 versions in circulation, which remain legal tender. The new version is being issued because of necessary changes to Czech banknote printing technology at the State Printing Office. The CNB advised the public of the plan to issue the new note in May this year.
The new CZK 5,000 note is the 30th koruna banknote to have been issued since the independent Czech Republic was established in January 1993. It has the same parameters and security features as the last, 2009 version of the CZK 5,000 note. The different year of issue and governor’s signature make it distinguishable from the 1999 and 2009 versions.
The differences arising from the different printing technology are not visible to the naked eye. However, the CZK 5,000 notes printed using the new technology need to be distinguishable from the original versions so that the central bank can monitor the circulation of banknotes.
Starting today, the CNB will gradually replace the existing 2009 and 1999 CZK 5,000 notes depending on their degree of wear and tear and the need to exchange them. However, the old versions will remain in circulation, so there is no need to exchange them actively for new ones at banks.
CZK 5,000 notes have the longest life of all the Czech banknotes, as their high denomination means that people tend not to carry them around and to use them for everyday payments. As a result, they are subject to less wear and tear. The CZK 5,000 note is the least common denomination, with fewer than 29 million in circulation. This represents around 5.5% of the total of 525 million circulating banknotes.
The following versions of Czech banknotes will be in circulation from 25 October onwards:
